manufacturing history
• in 2016 we started out by making a couple small batches of about 100 simple packs in a basement in utah.
• in 2017 we found a factory in arizona and made our first batch with them. we used this factory until early 2020.
• 2020-2021 we made our packs with a small team we trained in ogden, utah.
• 2021-present we make most packs in vietnam, most apparel in china, and some small batches with the ogden team.
• our end goal has always been to use high end factories in asia for their sewing expertise, quality control, and proximity to the technical fabric mills we work with. in our experience these factories are much more dialed than domestic operations.
• we are a small team (2 ppl). outsourcing manufacturing lets us spend our time designing and testing rather than running a small factory.
• we price our products with the most reasonable margins possible based on the cost per unit that we are charged by our factories.

MATERIALS
ultraweave
• ultraweave x - the 100d, 200d, and 400d variations of ultraweave consist of a 60% uhmwpe / 40% polyester woven face laminated (heated/glued) to a recycled polyester film, with an x lattice for increased tensile strength. this material is inherently waterproof due to it being laminated to a film backing. the high percentage of uhmwpe on the outer face makes it highly abrasion resistant. gridstop will eventually wet out where ultraweave does much better at not retaining moisture.
• ultraweave tx - fabrics listed with "tx" at the end (like ultraweave 400tx) have an additional layer of 70d polyester. this is used in high abrasion areas like back panels.
ULTRA WEAVE
MATERIALS
uhmwpe grid mesh
• 210d 2x2 uhmwpe grid mesh - 66% nylon/21% uhmwpe/ 13% spandex blend. 2x2 refers to the mm grid size of the uhmwpe weave. we developed this mesh with our fabric mill in korea when other uhmwpe grid meshes were no longer being produced. this mesh is extremely durable and stretches a good amount.
• 70d 3x3 uhmwpe grid mesh - 78% nylon/6% uhmwpe/16% spandex blend. 3x3 refers to the mm grid size of the uhmwpe weave. we developed this upgraded version of our grid mesh in 2024 and started using it in 2025. this mesh is the sweet spot for stretchiness, lightness and durability.
gridstop
• 210d uhmwpe gridstop - 92% nylon / 8% uhmwpe ripstop. dwr finish on outer and pu coating inside. gridstop holds up well to long term use because of its ability to slightly stretch which spreads loads in high stress areas. gridstop is very water resistant thanks to its pu coating but is not waterproof.
• 210d uhmwpe gridstop w/ carbonate coating - this is a coating we are using for the snow/alpine packs. it is waterproof and slightly thicker/more durable than the pu coating we normally use.

robic nylon
• 100% nylon. dwr finish on outer and pu coating inside. this nylon uses a high tenacity yarn that is more resistant to abrasion than standard nylon.
grid fleece
• 100% polyester knit w/ grid pattern.
durable stretch woven
• 88% nylon/12% spandex with a dwr finish. 4 way stretch.
pack construction
• we use a sewn binding to finish all seams.
• in our experience seam taping is very high cost and tends to be less durable bc it relies on glues or heat bonding which can degrade faster. sewn bindings are more durable and allow for easier repairs :)
• waterproofness - our packs are not fully waterproof, but do pretty well at keeping out light moisture. for thru-hiking/trips with heavy moisture we recommend using a waterproof packliner such as a trash compactor bag or nylofume.
pfas
• all of our products that use a durable water resistant (dwr) outer coating have historically used a c6 type dwr. c6 was the industry standard for many years and was believed to be the safer option compared to the previously used c8 type dwr. however, recent studies have shown that c6 dwr still contains some level of pfas. all items manufactured in 2025 and after will use a c0 type dwr, which is free of pfas. if you have any questions about dwr usage on our fabrics please feel free to reach out to us :)
